         Outside of one barely notable exception, none of the former Beatles’ compilations consider their group
work to even exist.  They all start right around the 1970 breakup, and spiral in different ways toward an unsatisfying
conclusion.  Not one explains how they got there though, as if four random guys close to 30 just suddenly started
pursuing music.  Without these important pieces, the whole story isn’t told.  Stories like how John Lennon was
the last to have a #1 hit, or how George Harrison and Ringo Starr were initially more popular than their more famous
bandmates.  How Paul McCartney would struggle lyrically without Lennon’s edge, or John basically turning into
Paul only a couple of years after deriding the whole Beatles concept in one of the starkest and well-received albums
ever released.  None of these can be comprehended without acknowledging their Beatles work, and pretending it never
happened does a disservice to all four men.

While the Beatles unquestionably did better work as group and
needed each other to push forward musically, this compilation seeks to understand them by considering their
Beatles’ songs separately.  For convenience’s sake, this simplifies to songs which they sung lead on.  I
know John didn’t write Twist And Shout, Paul didn’t write Till There Was You, George didn’t write
Do You Want To Know A Secret, and Ringo at best cowrote everything he’s ever sung.  The point is that they built
their legacies on these songs, since people subconsciously associated them together regardless of authorship. 
(Considering John and Paul often collaborated fairly equally, early hits where John’s voice stands out were given
to him, while later songs that seemed more Paul-driven (“Birthday”, “Two Of Us”) landed on his
CDs.)

Although attempting a more complete depiction of each Beatle, this collection does not tell the entire
story musically.  The 80s claimed many an artist, and none of them were immune.  Obviously John couldn’t
contribute, but Paul’s embrace of the popular 80’s style (and some odd duets apparently intended to end
racism) was matched by George and Ringo practically giving up after their worst work.  Mercifully all three lived long
enough to resurrect their careers, but that doesn’t make every single album worth covering.  Silence therefore
speaks as loudly as songs in this compilation.  If some period or album isn’t covered, it’s for a good
reason.

Considering John and Paul wrote the vast majority of Beatles songs and generally had more productive
solo careers, their sections of the compilation are much larger.  Both almost certainly would have had four CDs a piece,
but John’s untimely death robbed him of enough material.  Hampered by a lawsuit, George lost interest in his
music career around 1976 and never really regained it outside of a brief couple of albums in the late ‘80s.  1976
was also the year Ringo thought the ‘80s started, so don’t expect anything from that period from him.  The
compilation runs 10 CDs in total, which is just about enough for each Beatle.  As hinted at above though, this is not a
watershed for rare tracks or singles, and I don’t particularly care which awful songs topped the charts in the
early ‘80s.  The goal was to put the best songs on that are important for some reason, while keeping everything
listenable and enjoyable.  Adding tracks from Ringo’s late ‘70s and ‘80s albums would violate this,
and frankly so would “Ebony And Ivory”.

Every CD is also arranged chronologically, which is at
least in contrast to Paul’s compilations.  Given the shorter lengths of Beatles’ songs, many more tracks
appear on the early John and Paul CDs than the later ones, and there is no delineation regarding when a particular CD
ends.  While certain periods are skipped, there was a concerted effort to embrace each artist’s entire career and
include at least one track from every album.  Obviously this couldn’t be followed entirely, meaning John’s
experimental albums with Yoko, Paul’s classical and electronic outings, George’s early “solo”
records and Gone Troppo, and many of Ringo’s crappy albums were all skipped.  While not technically a
“full” picture, none of them were really necessary to understanding each man or would fit the concept. 
These are intended to be career-length and definitive compilations for each former Beatle, and you will be unlikely to
find another one which goes where this does.  A more detailed explanation for each artist is included in the torrent,
